UNDER-FUELING CAN BECOME A HEALTH PROBLEM.
- 01
Low energy availability occurs when dietary energy is insufficient relative to exercise demands and the energy needed for normal physiological function.
- 02
Short planned periods of lower availability are not identical to persistent problematic low energy availability or RED-S.
- 03
Possible consequences span performance, bone health, reproductive function, immunity, metabolism and psychological well-being in both women and men.
- 04
Persistent symptoms, rapid weight loss, menstrual changes, recurrent injury or suspected RED-S deserve qualified sports-medicine or dietetic assessment.
ENERGY LEFT AFTER EXERCISE STILL HAS JOBS TO DO.
Energy availability describes dietary energy remaining for normal body functions after accounting for exercise energy expenditure. The IOC framework recognizes a continuum: some low availability can be brief and adaptable, while more severe or prolonged exposure can become problematic and contribute to Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport.
RED-S IS MULTISYSTEM, NOT A SINGLE SYMPTOM.
The 2023 IOC consensus describes potential effects across bone, reproductive, immune, cardiovascular, metabolic and psychological domains as well as performance. Individual responses vary, so a checklist cannot diagnose the condition by itself.
CUTTING PHASES NEED A RECOVERY BUDGET.
Rapid weight loss, high training volume, appetite suppression, restrictive eating patterns and sports emphasizing leanness can increase risk. The relevant issue is not simply being in a calorie deficit; it is whether the deficit and exercise load leave enough energy to maintain health and adaptation.
LOOK FOR PATTERNS, NOT ONE BAD DAY.
Persistent fatigue, declining performance, recurrent injuries, mood changes, disrupted reproductive function or unexplained illness can justify further assessment, but none is specific to RED-S. Other medical or training causes must also be considered.
FUEL THE WORK YOU EXPECT TO RECOVER FROM.
Use a sustainable rate of weight change, adequate protein and carbohydrate, planned easier periods and enough total intake to support training. If performance and health markers deteriorate together, the answer is not automatically more stimulants or recovery gadgets.
THIS IS NOT A SELF-DIAGNOSIS PAGE.
RED-S assessment can involve clinical history, nutrition, bone health, reproductive function, labs and sport-specific risk. Anyone with significant symptoms or suspected disordered eating should use qualified professional care rather than trying to solve the problem from online thresholds alone.
